Prime Minister Stephen Harper also acknowledged Matheson's death on Twitter Sunday evening. "Canada has lost a great public servant," Harper said. "John R. Matheson played key roles in both the creation of the (Canadian) flag and the Order of Canada."
How cool is that? You see it so often, you probably can't judge anymore.
BTW, this particular image is a plot from an AutoCad drawing ... not an "official" rendering.
My VERY TORY parents were on the other side of the battle and I love the Union Jack and all but, you know ... this symbol is very special. Forget about how it was born. It is practically unique on the planet ... totally so for and advanced nation. There is no bombast, (obvious) heraldry, no eagle (which sets it aside form dozens of national flags). It is very ...cool.
Everywhere I have been on this planet, everyone immediately recognizes and knows
that flag.
Good one to have.
RIP John Matheson, and thank you.
You read about the massive fights to design the flag, what to include, who to placate, and so on. And yet, I can't imagine Canada with any other flag. A proper legacy indeed.
Blue skies and stormy weather,
Within my heart, above my home,
The Maple Leaf forever!

Damned straight - no need for blue on it anywhere!
RIP Mr. Matheson
RIP John Ross.
