Organizing the balloting in a war zone far from home brings with it some challenges Elections Canada does not normally face.

    Unlike most Canadians, soldiers will not be marking their ballots, which Elections Canada sent to Kandahar for distribution, with an 'x.'

    The ballots themselves are different from normal because each soldier has to go through a 112-page list of 415 candidates to choose one of the 308 electoral districts and its candidates they wish to vote for.


    Neat.. You have to go to Afghanistan to get that deal?

    Am i understanding it right, the soldiers get to choose which riding they vote in? I thought they only could choose the riding they're based in or the riding they come from?

    I have a feeling the vote only counts if they vote for the correct riding.

    No, they don't get to choose. It sounds to me like their ballots won't be designated to their ridings like ours, so they have to pick through that 112-page list of 415 candidates to choose one of the 308 electoral districts and its candidates. A little more work than we have to do. :lol:

    How it works is when you join you submit a "Statement of Ordinary Residence" form which entitles you to vote in your home riding i.e. the place you came from before joining, so the soldiers will give either there riding or postal code and will then be told who is running in that riding. Once you get a ballot your name is entered on the list so you cant vote twice.
