Children who are spared the rod may grow up to have higher IQs than those who are spanked, suggests a study by one of North America's foremost child psychology experts.
So I take it, for this study, that they got a group of moms and children, and told the moms to spank the child on the butt at least 3 times a week. They also had a control group of moms and kids. and the kids were told to behave exactly the same, but the moms were told NOT to spank.
Human beings are too complex to make such declarations. Too many variables to control and too many unknowns. What factor did genetics play? Pregnancy nutritional or stimulation in the womb. Who severe were the spankings. What level of commitment did the parents play in child education.
I'd say just as likely a conclusion is that parents who spank are less likely to provide a nurturing education environment rather then the spanking itself.
With studies like this they are often part of the "publish or perish" academic doctrine that more then anything is responsible for the studies that make you scratch your head.
Academics need to get published and as long as they aren't flubbing the data (even when they do sometimes) then they can make a conclusion and print it up.
Take milk and or eggs (and flour and beat). Every few years they print a new study saying its either good or bad for you. Every study comes with viable data to "support" the conclusion.

Not only salt is rising your bloodpressure, sugar does too!
Oh! Talking about that! Did you hear the latest study result?
Not only salt is rising your bloodpressure, sugar does too!
I know something else that raises my bloodpressure
But I'm not about to give that up.

Is it about pandas ?
I guess you could also come to the conclusion that kids with lower IQ's do more stuff they should be spanked for.
Score one for common sense.

Sometimes the simplest answer is the best.
This just in:
Taller people hit their heads on low-hanging objects more often than shorter people.
Must mean they have poorer eyesight.
Being dead may lower responsiveness.
Sounds like a side effect of a new drug...
Masturbation makes you blind...been doing it for years and still see 20/20
with my glasses on
Being dead may lower responsiveness.
And we paid you exactly how much again to get a study done that made you come to this conclusion?
