A new $10-million bike and pedestrian route linking Richmond and Vancouver will open Friday, three days ahead of the grand opening of the Canada Line, Metro Vancouver's new rapid-transit route.
WTF??? As we take major hits and cuts to Healthcare...they blow 10 mil on this?!!?!?!?!....Well I hope no one has a cycling accident cuz they wont be getting medical treatment anytime soon...IDIOTS!!!!
Lol, take a chill pill. The 10 mill for the bridge came out of the government budget 4 years ago, and the planning for it is almost a decade old. Do you really think they were expecting the current downturn and the effects it would have on the budget 8 years ago?
And realistically, 10 million isn't going to make a fuck of a difference for healthcare.
Great. Fill it with homeless and make another shelter for crack addicts. I really question how many people are walking or bicycling between Vancouver and Richmond anyways. This pandering to the cyco-nazies is the main reason why Translink has become the biggest and hungriest tax vampire in the province.
Can't scrap it now, the bridge has been completed for over 6 months, it would cost more to remove it now then to leave it where it is and use it as intended.
And no, I'm not aware of the planned cuts. Unfortunately I don't live in BC anymore, so please enlighten me.
Is the rest of Canada sheltered from our news except for the fact we are getting the Olympics....Well lets see....I could send you all VCH reports, FHA reports, I could send links to recent news....but I am sure you could find the news links right here at CKA.
proposed cuts during the Olympics for surgeries will be approximately 33% is just one recent bit of info. Projects that the government promised funding for 5 years to Mental Health and addiction are now being cut...A year in.
As Riden touched on, homelessness...The social housing in the Olympic village will probably not happen either, Why? because of cost overruns from the construction. This government here has lied, has cheated us and there should be a no confidence vote, but who do we have that could take over...Carol James...Hell no.
I dunno about the ROC. I'm sheltered from news because I'm on worup training and as such don't have 24/7 access to news. Thanks for the basic enlightenment though.
As for social housing, I agree that the total amount shouldn't be cut, but I don't think it shoudl be mixed in with for-profit developments... atleast not in the same building. Losing the social housing at the olympic village may be a blessing in disguise, cause then the city would be owed social housing it can put somewhere else in it's own dedicated building.
The reasons for separating the social housing are simple: I know someone who lives in the new Shangri-la building. The fire alarm there goes off atleast weekly because people in the social housing component keep setting the things off, usually cause someone pulls an alarm switch.
Fom what i've heard about Gregor Robertson, he is quite the douche.
Thats a pretty ignorant view of folks that are poor. Social housing can be mixed and it is all over this city...The olympic village has plenty of buildings. Why should Vancouverites, that are the poorest have to be moved out for the elite that just want a pretty view.
I lived in a for profit apartment building and the fire alarms went off all the time. Its a common occurrence in all apartments.
I do not believe that those who earn below the poverty line should be given a 500 000 dollar condo. I could understand a 100 000 - 200 000 dollar redevelopment in the burbs, but giving away half a million dollars worth of home to someone who makes less than 20K a year does not make sence financially. You'd be better off to sell it for what it is worth, and use the accumulated tax dollars to fund say... healthcare. Cause you know the poor bloe making only 20K isn't paying taxes, he has barely enough money to feed himself.
And no doubt the fire alarms went off all the time, I've been there too. But it wasn't a weekly occurance. More like once every 2 weeks to a month.
And realistically, 10 million isn't going to make a fuck of a difference for healthcare.
Work in Healthcare and then tell me to take a chill pill.
