Reed, the laid-back singer/songwriter who became a movie star courtesy Burt Reynolds, and whose banjo-picking tune "East Bound and Down" drove their hit Smokey movies, died yesterday of emphysema. He was 71.
His role as Henry Winkler's evil counterpart in "The Waterboy" deserved some kind of an award, and not just another Razzie either. Hollywood never figured out that Jerry was right and when you're hot you're hot, and when you're not, you're not. Whoa, some fuckin' heavy there karma man.
East bound and down, loaded up and truckin' We gonna do what they say can't be done We've got a long way to go, and a short time to get there I'm east bound, just watch ol' Bandit run
Keep your foot hard on the peddle, son, never mind them brakes Let it all hang out 'cause we've got a run to make The boys are thirsty in Atlanta, and there's beer in Texarkana And we'll bring it back no matter what it takes
Old Smokey's got them ears on, he's hot on your trail And he ain't gonna rest 'til you're in jail So, you gotta dodge him, you gotta duck him You gotta' keep that diesel truckin' Just put that hammer down and give it hell
one hell of a finger-picker..one of the very best.
Chet Atkins sure thought so, too.
RIP
That is so weird. I just saw Smokey and the Bandit for the first time in YEARS the other night and wondered if he was still alive.
RIP
whats even more weird is that I was half watching it last night on TV.. TCM
Shame to hear he's gone
East bound and down, loaded up and truckin'
