Ottawa offers $1.6B aid package for ailing energy sector

And how is giving billions to energy companies going to help people already unemployed? Fuckers.

Might stop further layoffs. In fact any loans should have been total contingent on no more layoffs. If that's all that comes out of it then at least it reduces the agony of even more unemployed. Can't look a gift horse in the mouth, not even a small one like this.

It's all about the optics. For the rest of Canada it looks like the Liberals are trying to help a province out that's going through hard times. What they're forgetting to tell the rest of the country is that. They're the reason for the hard times.

Everybody with half a brain can already see that if Ottawa really wanted to help the energy sector and Alberta, they'd build the fucking pipeline and quit using every excuse in the book to ensure it doesn't happen. They'd stop equalization payments to Quebec till these projects get back on track and they'd put tariffs on imported oil at least to the amount they've put on our own oil.

But hey, throwing a few dollars at Alberta is one hell of alot easier and cheaper than doing the right thing.

So tell us all what the right thing is.

I'll be far more pissed off if it ends up paying executive salaries and bonuses, like keeps happening with government giveaways to Bombardier, than to stabilize the companies so they can keep their staff employed.

You can't astroturf these issues as being just some typical right-wing con from the SUN, Ezra Levant, or the Tories. Not when it's an Alberta NDP government that's been literally begging the federal government to take what's happening here seriously. This is a cross-spectrum economic catastrophe, even if some of the usual ratfuckers (especially on the right) keep trying to reduce it to just another political/ideological fight.

Giving these energy companies more money isn't going to make a difference. Boy Blunder needs to push the Fraking Pipeline through and if he doesn't have the balls to do it let Rachel Notley do it because she obviously has a bigger pair.

He wants to help, Announce more EI for the Oil Patch workers or something. Something that helps us, not the mega rich.

And Beav, it's not BC holding up the pipeline it's the Court. BC lost it's last try. It's not like 90% of the country doesn't by now think we've done enough 'consulting' with natives and agree 'consulting' doesn't mean 100% of them need to be 100% onside.
I think it's all done but the waiting. And in the meantime, EI extensions should be given to oil workers just like it always is to auto workers and Atlantic Canada!

So are you saying that the oil companies do not want pipelines? Do they prefer the status quo of super slow rail delivery to their final destinations as a way to suppress the price of Canadian crude oil?

One Word: Expropriation. What you don't understand is Trudeau can declare the pipelines a "National Strategic Project"(or whatever), Take the land and assert Federal Jurisdiction on it.

I actually blame OPEC and the Saudi's for this mess. They over produced, they crashed the market, but the left is responsible for this anti-pipeline rhetoric.

I also blame every Alberta PC government since Lougheed for not having Alberta's best interests in mind when they entered into business friendly royalties that ensured less money found its way into provincial coffers. Alberta's Heritage Fund and Norway's Oil Fund were both supposedly set up the same way, yet only one is worth $1T dollars.

But I do still blame Quebec, and anyone that's fine with taking foreign oil over locally produced stuff. Quebec blocked the Energy East Pipeline.

BC is also to blame, absolutely.

But its not like Trudeau doesn't have the tools to get the Pipeline built. He just lacks the balls to get the job done.

This is why Alberta is musing with Separation, our concerns are ignored and provinces can act in a manner that damages the Confederation and the Federal Government is powerless to stop them.

None of this is good, but its clearly big Oil and Gas that's responsible.

If they had wanted good optics, then they should have offered an industry that contributes more to GDP than the Auto Sector more money than said Auto Sector. And cash, not loan guarantees. Assuming Canadians can't do maths has always been the federal governments failings.

This is what's going to help people keep their homes, not loan guarantees for technology upgrades or exploring new markets. Like no one here has already been looking for new markets?!? There are lots of new frikken markets! Selling to them is the problem.
