Trump is some sort of psycho, and really takes things personally. That could have been Kevin playing smart and laying some groundwork. Or it could have been his actual opinion.

Just to play advocate a little more - that goes to his lack of political experience. A politician playing it safe will STFU, not declare fealty to a foreign Head of State.
It might play well with Trump, but not so much with the voters at home.
