Well I'm not in the AF but I do know what the weather is like in the north and winter months are pretty much one big steady ground blizzard.
The shit hits the fan in september and go's to late june so wouldnt any jets stationed at Alert become hostages to the climate? They wouldnt do much good if they cant take off or land.

No real difference than CFB Goose Bay in winter. I spent three fun years there and CF18's can fly in all weathers.
They just need a decent hangar for the techies. Oh and a 10,000 foot runway for proper loggy support.

So they can taxi out of a hanger in zero visibility at -70 winchill and still take off?
I wouldnt want to be the ground crew.

They can with a ground truck leading them to the runway. Standard stuff zigs. Combat aircraft are designed with 'all-weather' in mind. I have been with various types on hot/high/cold testing. The CF18 can hack -70 wind chill. How warm do you think it is at 30,000 feet?

Tinfoil moment.

Did we shoot down one of the Russian bears last week? They story keeps changing it seems all day. Sound's like one aircraft was escorted away, then reports come out about two aircrafts. Am I the only one that caught this?

Christ on a crutch...

As you're able to post and not a mere shadow on the sidewalk, you heard wrong.
They didn't enter Canadian airspace. NOBODY is claiming that.
They won't unless we're so obviously slow to scramble they know they could AND they have orders to try from Moscow.
The only country on Earth with better planes than those 'obsolete Hornets' are the Yanks, so stop calling down everything Canadian and pretending you're being patriotic. The same Cdn Hornets that the USA asked us to send to cover Alaska while their planes were in refit.
Russia is even telling people it was one of these just to save some face:
Image
We should tell them to send one, so we can intercept it and take pictures and both of our countries can wag our fucking tails even more.

And Red Dawn was great. I never laughed so hard in my fucking life. Reaganist Hollywood's very own "Der Ewige Jude".

You're shaking your finger at the wrong guy...

I'm thinking there's a lot of people who have forgotten the antics of the Cold War...

You said it mate. This is "Cold War Part II". This time they are not up for invading Germany, they just want our Arctic.

If there was ever a case for re-arming for a new threat, the Russians have packaged it up nicely for us.

This is the time for Air Command to get a bit closer to the action.
Now is also the right time for CFS Alert to get a 10,000 foot runway and hardened shelters, oh and maybe some AA missiles.

We Brits always thought a few 'Argentinean whalers' were a bit of a joke too. Then they invaded the Falklands and we lost 250 guys and four ships taking it back.

Though I agree we need to badly bolster our stance and capabilities in the Arctic, I was more refering to the fact that the Russians used to do this all the time, and are still doing it somewhat regularly and without the media and political hysterics.

I'm not sure what Mackay was thinking of here in making a big deal about it? (I noticed that the US general from NORAD completely shrugged his shoulders at the event)I'm hoping that it was simply in order to draw attention to Arctic soverignty and not Bob Rae's idiotic assumption that it was to draw attention from the economic crisis.

Drive slowly. Even in a blizzard you can drive at 3 kph mate. Snow and cold have been around for a long time. Aircraft can fly though this stuff, it's nowt new!

I realize that but maybe I was in different blizzards because without someone holding a gps and telling me when to turn the snowcat, I would have been missing.
When I say zero visibility I mean you cant see past your goggles or outside any vehicle your in.You may as well be blind and I even have video of it.
Maybe the ground blizzards are more intense in the far north.

It's not uncommon for everything to come to a standstill for a week at a time during these blizzards.
I cant see how someone could taxi a fighter to the strip in one.

If the alternate is to have a Russian bomber in Canadian airspace, I'm sure even Air Command can get a pair of CF18's up. I've seen them scramble in very bad weather.

Within 10 seconds of leaving the hanger it would have drifts forming on it.
Underground would be the way to go,like a carrier.Just in case the hanger blows away.

I'm curious to how long it took to scramble the jets and get to Tuktayaktuk from cold lake.
