Another two pages of bullshit while ignoring the obvious.
Senate positions have to be filled.
Harper has tried, numerous times, to make changes to the Senate. He was unable due to lack of support.
3 years ago, Harper brought forth a bill that would have given Canadians a say on who represents them in the Senate.
Stephane Dion called the bill "completely irresponsible". Many Liberals accused the changes as being "too American".
So what should Harper do?
You've made a promise to change the Senate, you receive a minority government and you try a few times to make changes and get little to no support from your opposition or the Provinces.
So you fill these spots with people who support your vision on Senate reform so perhaps one day, you can make the changes you want.

ASLplease ASLplease: or proving that he is Prime Minister and is more than willing to act like one, don't you think? Then by that logic and extension, Jean Chretien was a truly fantastic Prime Minister.

ridenrain ridenrain: poquas poquas: ridenrain ridenrain: What do you bet that if the Liberals get in power in 8 years, they replace these temporary hacks with their own hacks for life? The only difference is that they won't be hypocritical doing it. No. They've never pretended to be more than power hungry crooks who will say and do anything to get and stay in power. .. but somehow that's better.. AND as usual, Ridenrain is at a loss for a genuine thought and throws out his patented out of context “Libs are bad” declaration all the while ignoring the facts and the very thought that his god incarnate might actually do something wrong. C’mon RR, grow a set. I didn’t defend the Libs. Senate appointments are the PM’s prerogative. It’s not going to change and you know it. Why can’t Harper be up front about it and admit he’s doing exactly the same thing Chretien did for exactly the same reason? It’s as though he’s pandering to that tiny little brain-dead core of the party that still believes the earth is only 5000 years old and whatever they do is better than what the opposition does even if it’s EXACTLY the same thing. Aw RR You didn’t understand a word I said, did you?............

OnTheIce OnTheIce: Another two pages of bullshit while ignoring the obvious. Speaking of..... I have one simple question for you. Please describe the process required by our constitution to make a change to the way our senate is appointed and the way it works, AND what government even in a majority position is capable of doing it.

poquas: You and so many here are beating up the CPC simply for partizan politics. Harper won't leave empty seats with a possible election comming up so he'll fill them despite his past statements of reforming the senate. He cant reform the senate when it's packed with Liberal hacks or when Quebec and the east fear losing their grip on power.
.. so it all comes down to "he lied".
Well boo-frik's hoo. Grab a tissue, clean yourself up and join the big peoples table when your ready.

Zipperfish Zipperfish: 26 in 8 months? Business as usual on the Hill. Meet the new boss / same as the old boss. Too bad Harper and his party campaigned on 'accountability' and all that. I guess the electorate was naive for believing him...

Any Liberal calling these appointments hypocritical is, in fact, hypocritical. The Liberal supporters remained quiet for 2+ decades while the Liberal Party stacked the senate with whomever they liked. Now tht it's not their party stacking the senate it's time to pout and call Harper a facist.
Fact is the "Senate" has been a sham for 2000+ years.

Ok. And your point? That "The West" has no business having a turn or a say in running the country? That only Ontario gets that privilage? Alberta should just shut up and do what it's told? If that's not your point then I apologize, but if it is your point well you wouldn't be alone and when it bothers people that someone with an Albertan voting base --- (WHICH by the way means nothing - every vote in Alberta for the Cons does not match the number of people from Ontario who voted for them as well, so to call it a 'base' is a little off, imo) --- is running the country.....now.
Oh well. For 30+ years it's been Ontario pandering to Quebec and "everyone else can just stfu". Many are happy with the change.

Fact is the "Senate" has been a sham for 2000+ years. I am (was) a lifelong Conservative and I'm calling these appointments hypocritical. Not because they’re being made, but because they’re being made with the suggestions that “he has to do it” and that “they’re only here until the Senate changes”. Harper is doing what every other PM has done for the same reasons. To obtain more power. It would be nice if he had the guts to admit it and stop pretending it's going to be different because he's doing it.

Then by that logic and extension, Jean Chretien was a truly fantastic Prime Minister. you dont know me, do you? I remember a case where Alberta elected a 'senator in waiting'. however, cretien used his authority as PM to appoint his own senators, and he snubbed the will of the alberta public. At the time, i said the same thing about cretien as i have about harper ie "...proving that he is Prime Minister and is more than willing to act like one..."
