Yes but as Ziggy has pointed out they can't just fly in and scoop them up. It would take a substantial effort to even break even getting those resources and a military presence greatly exceeding a few aircraft fly overs.
He knows just how difficult it is building roads and wells in that region. I suspect our reaction time for something like this would be of no real factor in trying to get them.
We could conceivably sit back and let them build the resource gathering infrastructure at great initial cost outlay while we built up a substantial defence force then simply kick them out of our country and help ourselves to the spoils.
The reason they send the bears is they were built for long transatlantic flight's and are cheaper then sending icebreakers as far as ruffling feathers go's.
Hope the newer retrofitted bear's at least have bathroom's now.
I also agree this has been happening for years,and I'm old enough to remember a red under every bed and the importance of the DEW line.
As for drilling well's,good luck with that,the technology is there but very expensive and it would have to be done by ship as there's literally no roads up there.
